At the end of Halo: Silentium, the Gravemind delivered a haunting revelation to the Librarian just minutes before the IsoDidact would fire the Halo array. That not only was the Domain—literally the backbone of all Forerunner communication—a Precursor creation, but that it would also (along with every other Precursor artifact in the galaxy) be destroyed by the firing of the Halos. The consequences of this were worse than the revelation itself. All Forerunner history was erased, and worse…the Librarian’s plan of having the Didact help humanity untold millennia later would backfire, as the Librarian intended the Didact to spend his next 100,000 years in a Cryptum meditating with the Domain, and not dwelling on only his anger and hatred and insanity (which was what ultimately happened). Either way, things got fucked.
However, even in lieu of the Gravemind’s twisted revelation, Halo 5: Guardians seems to suggest otherwise. Because the Domain plays a huge role in the story. Actually, the Master Chief is being contacted by the Domain itself:
“I am the Warden Eternal, keeper of the Domain and her secrets. The Master Chief is called, but you…your passage is denied.”
Anyway, how is it that the Domain, despite being said by a literal recreation of a Precursor to be both a Precursor construct and would be destroyed by the Halos, is still around and/or awakening in Halo 5?
The answer could reside within 2013’s Halo: Spartan Assault, and it’s second main character, Spartan Edward Davis.
During Spartan Assault, Edward Davis received a rather darker fate. In the hunt for Merg Vol, Davis and a squad of UNSC Marined would attack the Sangheili warlord in attempt to stop him from destroying Draetheus V with a Forerunner mining device. However, both Davis and the Marines would be overcome by Covenant forces, and killed. However on that however, Davis’s conscious would be absorbed by a Forerunner sublimation device and uploaded into a Durance. The digitized personality of Davis would then try to communicate with Spartan Sarah Palmer, eventually being recovered by the UNSC. Digidavis’s fate following this event is unknown.
Now, let’s look at the Domain’s return in Halo 5: Guardians. Based off pseudo-Cortana’s line of dialogue in Mission 2: Blue Team, and by how the Domain was entirely absent during the Didact’s imprisonment for 100,000 years, we can infer that it has returned from nonexistence.
The Domain is open. Meridian is next. You only have three days. John…the Reclamation is about to begin.
It could be that Spartan Davis’s digitized personality became the basis for which the Domain was reformed.
